My family and I became part of the community of Revelstoke more than 15 years ago. During my tenure here, I have worked in a variety of capacities but I’ve always felt honoured to be invited to join with others on their journey. Sometimes the journey has been to clarify values and belief; sometimes it has been to adjust thoughts and behaviours; sometimes it is about gathering supports, resources and advocates and sometimes the journey has been about understanding how our past has influenced us – both in helpful and unhelpful ways.
I am trained as a Marriage and Family Therapist and am registered as a Clinical Fellow with both the Canadian and American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. The theoretical basis of my training and practice is systems theory which means I am interested in how all the various parts fit together. This can be the parts of an individual, a couple, a family or an organization. Sometimes parts mesh with little or no challenge while at other times, the cogs of the wheel no longer slide smoothly against one another.
I completed my graduate work in Kansas and, as part of my clinical training, had the good fortunate to work in the Menninger’s clinic (Kansas City), a US Army base and numerous community-based therapy clinics. Since finishing my degree, I have practiced in a long term, private, adolescent psychiatric hospital, a child and youth mental health clinic, an eating disorder treatment program, with children and youth with special needs – and their families, and with adults facing a variety of mental health concerns.
I also work with a number of youth on the Autism spectrum. This work focuses on developing life and social skills so we can have/be friends, manage our sensory input and thrive in the complex world we are all a part of.
I am a believer in lifelong learning so regularly attend workshops, seminars and training opportunities. It is important to me to use evidence based practices to articulate the goals that guide our work.
I provide services through a number of Employee and Family Assistance programs that contract with many of our local employers. Many of my clients are also able to utilize Extended Health benefits to help with costs.
